Project Objectives

In order to fill the gaps needed to tackle the present technical limitations which hinder the implementation of future flexible (‘Smart’) and DC-equipped electrical distribution architectures, ASSTRA has defined the following 4 key Research Objectives (ROs).

RO1:

Analyse and evaluate the existing concepts found in literature and further assess their suitability for the specifications determined in the WP1. Further develop existing concepts into potentially novel concepts which are favourable for the scope of the ASSTRA program.

RO2:

Develop models for, and introduce novel concepts of the converter and medium frequency transformers with focus on high isolation/thermal requirements and enabled by advanced manufacturing techniques. These models are combined with the knowledge obtained from RO1 to reach
a fully functional SST power conversion unit to be tested in the ABB premises.

RO3:

The models developed in RO2 are the base for the realizing of an optimized converter design, since they describe the behaviour of the key converter component. The objective of this WP is to design and execute a set of tailored practical experiments aimed at verifying the models developed in RO2.

RO4:

Integrate the learnings from RO1, RO2 and RO3 to investigate the system performance in real case scenarios. These scenarios include stringent and also abnormal operating conditions such as overload, asymmetric, transient and stand-alone operation, all of which should be tested on scaled as well as full-scale SST prototype demonstrator systems that will be realized at ABB.

The ASSTRA program aims to train two ESRs to highly skilled professionals through collaborative, forefront research projects and training activities. The ESRs will be awarded Ph.D. degree and will acquire the necessary knowledge, expertise, skills, and research attitude that enables them to cope with multidisciplinary problems of highly complex nature and to synthesize adequate solutions to the repulsing challenges of Solid State Transformer (SST) technology and advanced power electronic systems in general.

The ASSTRA network provides a diverse, well-balanced, structured training program in which scientific, personal, and transferable skills will be used and developed to the fullest.

The program has a strong industrial orientation and will greatly enhance the mobility of the ESRs across disciplines and sectors (industry and academia).

The ASSTRA network has defined the following five core Training Objectives (TOs):

  • TO1 - enhancement of employability and career attractiveness

  • TO2 - from science to business training

  • TO3 - development of a broad personal skill set

  • TO4 - creating an active, life-long, inter-sector network and European eco-system

  • TO5 - acquirement of social understanding and scientific integrity skills
